Honda Wants to make its Own Hypercar
August 07 2024

The back story!

While creating a hypercar would be a challenge for Honda, we are certain it is one they are prepared to tackle. That is because the automaker has collected a great deal of knowledge from its time in F1 – specifically during its partnership with Red Bull Racing — and as the saying goes, “knowledge is power!” They also plan, in 2026, to officially partner with Aston Martin in Formula 1.

No plan is yet in place to move this idea forward, but the desire to do so is surely present. Honda expects to have sporty hybrid and electric cars on the road in the near future, and this is just another example of an innovative, special project.

What we know so far is that an F1-inspired hypercar may be just as extreme as the track-only Red Bull RB17, and the NSX name has been earmarked for an electric supercar, although plans may change according to customer demands.

Honda is extremely interested in building this halo hypercar which would serve to both mark and celebrate the automaker’s long-running relationship with the premier class of motorsport, Formula 1. Honda Racing Corp. president Koji Watanabe has even been quoted as saying about this idea: “Yes, yes, but no plans yet. But in the future, we want to make such (a) kind of vehicle combined with F1 technology.”

Further, Acura Vice President Jon Ikeda has left some further clues, suggesting that the NSX replacement is in fact in development, stating that he “would bet on it…going to be electric”.

However, an all-electric hypercar would not truly embody the spirit of F1, and an F1-inspired hypercar of the same ilk as the Red Bull R817 would not sell in the numbers that an NSX is usually produced in. Despite that, the NSX name, which stands for New Sports eXperimental, and a hypercar with F1 technology, would in fact fall under the acronym as a new and support experimental product for Honda.

This hypercar also has a good chance of coming to fruition in light of the partnership with Honda supplying Red Bull racing with powertrains coming to an end in 2025. That means that Red Bull will produce its own engines with assistance from Ford, and Honda will replace Mercedes-AMG as the powertrain partner for the Aston Martin Formula 1 team.

Aston Martin already has the Valkyrie hypercar as its F1-inspired halo car, first presented in AM-RB –1 concept form in 2016. Once Aston and Honda begin their collaboration, Valkyrie will be a decade old, and it may coincide with Honda wanting to build a hypercar all on its own.

While there are so many “ifs,” even the idea alone is an enticing prospect!

Celebrating the automaker’s involvement in Formula 1 may result in a hypercar, which sounds so very appealing! While it may be challenging, it will surely be exciting! A Honda Hypercar? Keep your fingers crossed!!
