What’s in store!
In this roomy midsize three-row SUV, starting at $40,200, the Pilot delivers in many significant ways. That begins under hood with a refined, 285-hp V-6 and 10-speed automatic transmission, with the vehicle offered in either front- or all-wheel drive, despite the fact that the SUV is primarily a front-wheel-drive model. While drivers won’t find this model particularly quick, its throttle response is linear and the 10-speed automatic shifts are smooth. The result of this is the overall feel of a refined ride when on the open road, as well as confidence-inspired steering and braking.
Honda promises that its most rugged TrailSport model is extremely capable, especially on moderately difficult terrain. It features a special suspension with a 1.0-inch lift, steel skid plates, all-terrain tires, a hill-descent control system and a specially tuned all-wheel drive system with a Trail driving mode.
In terms of acceleration, the Pilot gets to 60 from 0 mph anywhere from 6.9 to 7.2 seconds depending on trim level. Those opting for the TrailSport will realize the quicker time, which happens to be typical in the area of performance for vehicles in this class.
Those interested in towing and payload capacity will be pleased, with the Pilot’s maximum at 5,000 pounds last year, but just for the all-wheel-drive models. Front-wheel drive Pilots have the ability to tow about 3,500 pounds.
Comfort is the word of the day when it comes to the cargo, with this family-friendly SUV designed for great use and for many occupants. In fact, most trims can seat up to eight across three rows of seats; with the second-row captain’s chairs optional on the EX-L trim yet standard on the TrailSport.
Within the Touring and Elite models are second-row seat designs where the middle section can be removed and stored under the floor in the cargo area when not needed. And those extra thirsty are in luck, as Honda promises that eight of the Pilot’s cupholders can accommodate large 32-ounce water bottles!
Tech lovers will delight in an 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen and accompanying 7.0-inch digital gauge cluster, offerings standard on the base Sport. Thanks to Honda’s latest infotainment interface, drivers and passengers alike enjoy the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, while all other models are presented with a larger 9.0-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Elite and Black Edition models come with a 10.2-inch gauge cluster, with Honda equipping the Pilot with a standard 7-speaker stereo system, while Touring and Elite models come with a premium 12-speaker setup from Bose.
Speaking of the Black Edition, a new addition for this model year, style is at its core. The trim level encompasses gloss black 20-inch wheels, Black Edition badges and other blacked-out interior trim elements. Within the cabin, the black is also made clear, including through embossed leather front seats and door mats featuring the Black Edition logo. There are also red accents throughout the cabin, including crimson stitching on the steering wheel, seats and door panels. This trim comes standard with all-wheel-drive.
The Pilot is chock full of safety features due to a comprehensive suite through Honda Sensing. That bundle includes automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlamps and more. Those desiring more information on the vehicle’s crash test results can visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety websites.
